Tra le classiche celebrazioni motorsport storiche inglesi va sicuramente inserito Race Retro, che dà il via a questo tipo di eventi all’inizio dell’anno. Nel 2016, però, il numero di visitatori è lievemente calato rispetto al 2015 (29.500 contro 29.700 nel 2015) e lo spettacolo ne ha un po’ risentito, in qualche modo.
Eppure le attività di rally, che recitano la parte del leone a Stoneleigh, erano più grandi che mai, con corse ‘amichevoli’ nel circuito posto all’esterno dello show: un tracciato di solito fangoso, coinvolgendo il 20% in più di auto rispetto allo scorso anno. La Triumph Dolomite Sprint presente quest’anno è stata una gradita alternativa e un cambiamento rispetto alle “solite note” Vauxhall Firenza, Metro 6R4 e Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. Inutile dire che una delle più ammirate era la Lancia Delta S4 Gruppo B in livrea Martini.

Come sempre, grandi nomi e volti noti si potevano ammirare per tutto il weekend, anche se uno, in particolare, è stato seguito con calore e affetto: il campione del mondo Damon Hill che ha ricordato il suo titolo (ottenuto 20 anni fa con la Williams); inutile dire, l’evento ha riunito quattro delle auto guidate dal campione, giunte dalla Williams Heritage Collection: la vincente FW18 campione del mondo con lui, la FW17 che volse una gara nel 1995, la FW15C del 1993 con cui Damon ha vinto il suo primo Gran Premio e una 1990-91 FW13B con cui debuttò come collaudatore alla Williams nel 1991.
All’interno della mostra, centinaia di stand hanno esposto tutto ciò che si può pensare, quando si tratta di auto storiche da corsa: parti, ricambi, accessori, tute, caschi e modellini di automobili.
Nel fine settimana si è svolta l’asta di Silverstone Auctions, che ha prodotto 4,7 milioni di sterline contro i 3,62 dell’anno scorso). Un nuovo prezzo da record del mondo è stato raggiunto per una Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2,5-16 Evolution del 1990 che II, con solo 1.723 miglia percorse, è stata battuta a 292.500 sterline. Forse più impressionante, però, era la Ford Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’ del 1987, con un altrettanto basso chilometraggio (solo 936 miglia) aggiudicata per 54mila sterline. Un altro record del mondo, e forse un triste pensiero notando che certi classici stanno andando sempre più al di là della portata della maggior parte degli appassionati. E le italiane? Sono andate abbastanza bene, 1981 Countach LP400 del 1981 venduta per 213.750 sterline e una Ferrari 550 Maranello del 1999 aggiudicata per 110.250 sterline, 30mila al di sopra della sua stima più bassa.
Uno spettacolo britannico molto amato, in sostanza, anche se va detto che in futuro cambierà l’organizzatore, con l’ingresso di Clarion Events.

Yet the rallying activities, always a large part of the appeal at Stoneleigh, were bigger than ever, with ‘friendly’ racing happening outside the premises, in the usually muddy circuit, involving 20% more cars than last year. The Triumph Dolomite Sprint participating this year was a welcome change from the “usual suspects” Vauxhall Firenza, Metro 6R4 and Sierra RS Cosworth. Needless to say, to the Italian eye, the Group-B Martini-liveried Lancia Delta S4 won for evocative looks and heritage.
As always, big names and famous faces were to be spotted throughout the weekend, though one, in particular, was celebrated: World Driver’s Champion Damon Hill remembered his title (20 years ago) and time with Williams; needless to say, the event gathered four of the cars driven by the champion, fresh from the Williams Heritage Collection: the championship winning FW18, the 1995 FW17 race winning car, the 1993 FW15C with which Damon won his first Grand Prix, and a 1990-91 FW13B which Damon drove to make his debut as a Williams test driver in 1991.
Inside, hundreds of exhibitor stands covered everything one can think of, when it comes to historic racing: parts, spares, accessories, race suits, helmets and model cars.
Silverstone Auctions held its sale during the weekend, just like the previous two years. In 2016, though, the overall auction yielded £4.7m (£3.62m last year).
A new world record price was achieved for a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II which, with just 1,723 miles on the clock, sold for £292,500.
Perhaps more impressive, though, was the 1987 Ford Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’ with a similarly low mileage of just 936 miles, which sold for £54,000. Another world record, and perhaps a somber reminder of the fact that more and more classics are now commanding prices which are beyond the reach of most enthusiasts.

A much-loved British show, now a teenager (it turned 13 in February), Race Retro changes hands after this year’s event, as the show has been sold to new organisers Clarion Events.
